Formally an Roman Amphitheatre, now called Piazza Anfiteatro, this is one of the most famous places to visit in the city of Lucca.
The Piazza retains the original shape of the Roman Amphitheatre as the houses, cafes and restaurants built inside the space are actually built on the ancient basement of the Roman structure. When a visitor takes a walk around the oval space they will still be able to see some of the original Roman stonework in the walls.
During the Middle Ages, people looted the marble from the Amphitheatre and the interior became crowded with wooden houses. It wasn't until the 19th century that a famous architect of Lucca, Lorenzo Nottolini took away the wooden structures and created the Piazza that...
... visitors see today. In December a market is held in the Piazza, but every other month of the year it is the perfect place to sit at an outdoor cafe or restaurant and do some people watching.
