The district of Dorsoduro in Venice, Italy is on the opposite bank of the Grand Canal from San Marco district and is reached by crossing the Accademia bridge. Dorsoduro is a long narrow arm of land between the Grand Canal and the Canale della Guidecca in Venice. Near the tip sits a famous Dorsoduro landmark, the Santa Maria della Salute. Also known as the Church of the Virgin Mary of Good Health this lovely church is commonly called 'La Salute'.
After the devastating plague of 1630-31, which caused the death of 47,000 Venetians, the city decreed to build a shrine to the Virgin Mary for ending the disease. The Senate of Venice commissioned a young (32 years old) architect Baldassre Longhena to build 'La Salute' and although he designed other buildings, he spent the next fifty years supervising the progress of Santa Maria della Salute in Dorsoduro, Venice in Italy.
The lovely church is octagonal and has six chapels, each with its own altar. Other than the ones found in Rome, La Salute is the only Baroque landmark of this kind built in Italy.
Venice, Italy is such an elegant place to visit where history explodes and a trip to the District of Dorsoduro to see this landmark is well worth it. The scenery along the district waterfront is beautiful and many people just love to enjoy the view.
