The forbidding Dolomite peaks named Tre Cime di Lavaredo (three peaks of Lavaredo) or in German - Drei Zinnen (three battlements are near the community of Toblach in the South Tyrol region of Italy. The Tre Cime di Lavaredo are one of the most famous mountain peaks in the Alps.
The largest peak (2999 meters) was ascended by Paul Grohmann on August 21st 1869 and ten years later on the same date the western peak (2973 meters) was conquered by Michel Innerkofler. Then on July 1881 the smallest mountain (2857 meters) was climbed by Michel and Hans Innerkofler. It is interesting to note that one of the guides on the first climb was also an Innerkofler (Franz).
Oddly enough the route up the small mountain peak is the most difficult, but the three original routes up these Dolomite peaks are still used today. The year 2007 marks the tenth 'Drei Zinnen Alpine Run', a 17.5 meter run with a 1350 vertical drop. Obviously, an event only for the hardiest souls.
