The Doges Palace in the Piazzetta San Marco in Venice, Italy is a most impressive building of white and pink marble. There are very few remains of the early 10th century fortress originally built on the site for the doges of the time.
The construction of today's Palazzo Ducale in Venice was begun in the 12th century and continued on through the years, although most of the work was done during 1309 and 1424. It is believed Filippo Calendario was the designer.
The Doges Palace in Venice has a central courtyard around which there are many political offices. On the second floor you will find the Grand Council Chamber and the Doge's apartments.
Overlooking the Piazzetta San Marco there is a long balcony where the Doge would stand between two pink pillars - all the others are white - to watch executions which took place between the columns of San Marco - topped by a bronze winged lion, and San Teodoro column with a dragon on top.
