The history of Discovery Harbour in Ontario, Canada dates back many years to the Penetanguishene British naval and military base era when this world was constructed during the War of 1812. Many ships were prepared to help the various British posts and it was not long after that, in 1820, that Discovery Harbour was home to approximately seventy people and at least twenty vessels. The majority of the people were either sailors, officers, shipwrights and soldiers and the buildings were built to house these people.
Soon the men were joined by their families and French traders also became some of the residents of Discovery Harbour and not long after, the British Army pensioners moved in. The dockyard, sailor's barracks, an assistant's surgeon house, a cemetary, a commanding officer's house, a naval surveyor's house, the Keating House and the Officer's Quarters were some of the more prestige buildings constructed.
