Although the Falls were named after Thomas Dawson, an avid explorer of what is now called Egmont National Park, Maori legend tells it differently.
The Maori legend gave the falls the name of Te Rere-a-Noke, the falls of Noke who was said to have hidden from his pursuers under the veil of the falls.
The falls are fringed by natural native forest and bush and flow over an escarpment made up of several layers of pumice, lava, ash and gravel which are clearly visable to the sides of the waterfall.
