The scene in the north-east corner of Spain is a beautiful, rugged stretch of coastline called Costa Brava. It is 160 kilometers long and stretches from Barcelona to the border of France.
The village of Sant Feliu de Guixols on Costa Brava in Spain has two lovely beaches as well as a monastery and a church worth visiting. A market is held on Sundays selling local wares.
The winding road is fraught with hairpin curves, but well worth the trip to the medieval walled town of Tossa de Mar in the Catalonia region of Spain. The painter Marc Chagall admired the scene and named the town 'Blue Paradise' when he spent the summer there in 1934.
The only painting in Spain by Chagall hangs in the Municipal Museum in Tossa de Mar. The town has a population around 5500, although during the tourist season the town and beaches are crowded. There is also an abundance of souvenir shops.
In the 1950s' Tossa de Mar in Spain was the site of the Hollywood movie "The Flying Dutchman" starring Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra, when they were a married couple. A statue of her was erected in the old town.
Also in the 50s' the Franco-governed Spain decided the Costa Brava was an ideal area to be developed for the tourist trade. The wonderful warm summers, and the miles of sandy beaches, was all that was needed to bring visitors from the rest of Europe and Britain making the towns of Costa Brava in Spain the regular holiday destination.
