On the very top of a cliff, sits the village of Corniglia, one of the five that make up the Cinque Terre in Liguria, Italy. A lingering haze over the Mediterranean Sea is blocking out the full intensity of the sun making the village appear to have a mystical aura about it.
This village is the smallest of the five in the Cinque Terre and the only one that can not be reached by boat. It sits about 300 feet above the sea and once you disembark the train at the Corniglia village station, you must still walk up the 300 feet. The trek up to the village of Corniglia is not an easy one, but once you reach the top an incredible feeling takes over. There is a small bus that will take you to the top of the village but you do not seem to get the...
... same feeling as if you attempt the walk.
Three of the four sides of this village are vineyards and terraces while the fourth side overlooks the sea and the cliffs down are extremely steep. Most of the homes are built very close to each other because of the steep incline that the village sits on and the community events all take place in the village square. An extremely friendly community that welcomes visitors to enjoy the special atmosphere that Corniglia has compared to the other Cinque Terre villages.
Most of the tourists that come to the Cinque Terre in Liguria, Italy bypass the village of Corniglia due to the fact that it is a little difficult to reach. Do not make this mistake when visiting Liguria, as you will be stunned by the charm, good food and wine, history and the amazing scenic views that Corniglia has to offer.
