A close up of this Common Mormon Butterfly lets one see the brightly colored markings and contours in detail of the wings of this species of butterfly. As the butterflies flutter around you in the Victoria Butterfly Gardens, one Common Mormon decides to take a breather. As he perches atop a leaf, it gave us the perfect opportunity for this close up.
Female Common Mormons are more colorful than the males as they have crimson on their hindwings whereas males have only white bands. Not only are the females prettier, they are usually larger than the males when fully grown. The wingspan of the Common Mormon Butterfly can be up to four inches and as adults they prefer to feed on flower nectar.
The Common Mormon is not in the least...
... bit threatened and it is one of the butterflies that can be seen regularly while in its own range of Southeast Asia. For those who many never reach those areas, the Victoria Butterfly Gardens is the next best place to see a Common Mormon Butterfly.
