The 12th century Collegiate Church of San Candido (Innichen) in the South Tyrol region of Italy is a very good example of the Roman architecture of the time. Duke Tassilo lll of Bavaria founded the Benedictine Convent of San Candido in the 9th century, but in 1143 construction was started to convert the Convent into the Collegiate Church. The Church was completed near the end of the 13th century and the bell tower was finished by 1326.
The Collegiate Church of San Candido in Italy is not an ornate structure, in fact it has the solid look of a Medieval fortress, however the large frescoes in the dome depicting the Creation are most impressive. San Candido has many religious buildings worth visiting, one of them being the Altotting Chapel which copies the style of the Holy Sepulchre Church in Jerusalem. Another site that should not be missed is the restored World War 1 "Burg' Cemetery, where the care taken in the maintenance of the cemetery is a tribute to the fallen soldiers of the long ago conflict.
