Vernazza is the one of the five cliffside villages of the Cinque Terre, Liguria in Italy and probably the most picturesque. The other four villages, Monterosso, Corniglia, Manarolo and Rio Maggiore can all be reached from Vernazza by connecting paths. Walking from Monterosso to Rio Maggiore (with the other three villages between) would take about four and a half hours.
Vernazza, Liguria was settled around 1000AD, it has the only true harbour of the Cinque Terre. The Castello Doria was built around 1550 to protect Vernazza from pirates.
Vernazza, Italy is surrounded by olive groves grown on very steep terraces as are the grape vines. It is a wealthier village than the other four, noticeable by the elegant houses and streets with...
... arcades.
The Cinque Terre in Liguria, Italy was declared a National Park in 1999 and two years earlier in 1997 UNESCO made it a protected territory due to its natural environmental system.
