Chilean Flamingos: Scientific Name:
Phoenicopterus chilensis
Although these graceful birds are not listed as endangered, Chilean Flamingos, are considered to be threatened with the likelyhood of becoming endangered. The biggest threat to the Flamingos are humans and if trade is not regulated.
Flamingos live in wetland habitats and feed on seeds, algae, and aquatic invertebrates. They stir up the mud in the shallows of a lake or estuary and filter the water through their beak also using their tongues. It is their diet which gives them the beautiful pink plumage, and therefore those animals kept in captivity have the colour added artificially to their diet.

The beautiful plumage of these Chilean Flamingos comes from the pigments in the tiny animals they eat.
