Mainly ground dwellers, the Chacma Baboon finds grasslands, semi-desert, rocky caves and seaside cliffs as their home surroundings.

The baboon lives in social groups of between 20-50 animals and will always have one dominant male and one dominant female leading the group. The rest of the females and the young Chacma Baboons will be in the center with the rest of the male population surrounding them. This way the male baboon(s) are always prepared to defend their troop.
