The Camposanto, cemetery, in the City of Pisa in Italy, Europe was created in 1278 by Giovanni di Somone. A walled building on the Campo di Miracoli, built, as the legend goes, to contain shiploads of earth from the Holy Land, brought back by an Archbishop who went to the Crusades.
Prior to the July 27th, 1944 bombing historic frescoes covered the walls - but, unfortunately, the bombs destroyed many of these works of art. Some where salvaged and restored, and the Camposanto still has sarcophagi, statues and frescoes to keep the history alive. This peaceful cemetery, especially at dusk, has a small grass square surrounded by an arcade-type corridor, and is still the last resting place for the important people of Pisa, Italy.
