Set at the foot of Sulphur Mountain, the Cave and Basin National Historic Site in the resort town of Banff, Alberta, is the birthplace of Canada's National Park system which now consists of over 40 protected areas.
Three railroad workers discovered the Cave and Basin in 1883. Although they were not the first to discover the hot springs they can be attributed for bringing it to public attention while attempting to lay claim to it. This public attention subsequently lead to a court ruling in 1885 that declared the Cave and Basin Hot Springs as a National Park belonging to all Canadians. Banff National Park was to be the first of many National Parks in Canada.
