While driving along the Catlin's Highway of New Zealand, the coastline is made up of many hectares of farmland where sheep enjoy spending their days. Pastoral farming is the main source of income for the local people of the Catlins and the fertile soil is ideal for grazing sheep.
The farmland that borders the coastline of the Catlins is made up of rolling green farmland where many of the sheep and beef farmers keep their livestock. Each farmer has approximately three hundred hectares of farmland where there are about 2,500 to 3,000 sheep grazing per farm. The main bulk of the money comes from the exporting of lambs with the remaining being from wool and the sale of the older sheep.
This coastline receives a fair amount of rain each year but the temperature is relatively stable with only a small amount of snow that falls which never seems to hang around for long. The sheep along this area of the Catlins in New Zealand are sent outside all year to graze with a few variations to the species in the winter and summer months.
One particular sheep was not too interested in eating when we passed by as he was probably wondering what were doing on his grounds or he decided posing for the camera was a better option. Most tourists that visit the Catlins in New Zealand and see the sheep grazing along the coastline find these animals very cute and can not believe how many of them there are scattered across the countryside.
