There are many lovely and awe-inspiring things to enjoy when visiting the Cathedral of Pisa in Italy, Europe. The Duomo (Cathedral) dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta has five naves, with a three naved transept. The architect, Buscheto laid the first stone of this Romanesque cathedral in 1063. The beautifully carved architecture of the pulpit was designed by Giovanni Pisano and finished in 1310.
A fire in the Cathedral in 1595 did much damage to the interior, including the pulpit which was taken apart, crated up and left to gather dust. Not until 1926 was this work of art discovered, restored and returned to its rightful spot. In the Baptistery, close to the Duomo there is a similar pulpit designed by Nicola Pisano, Giovanni's father. These pulpits are probably the last of the work of the Pisanos.
