The Cathedral in Valencia, Spain, the Catedral de Santa Maria de Valencia, was originally dedicated to the Holy Saviour but later El Cid and King Jaime the Conqueror honored the Blessed Virgin. The cornerstone for the cathedral was laid in 1262 and was built on the previous site of a mosque - and some say an early Roman temple dedicated to Diana.
The Valencia cathedral in Spain has three naves and three entrances. The imposing Baroque main entrance, Puerta del Hierros, was built at the start of the 18th century by Conrad Rudolphus. The Puerta del Palau entrance, in the south transept, was built in the Romanesque style.
The most interesting entrance to the Cathedral of Valencia in Spain is the entrance in the north transept -...
... Puerto de los Apostles, the Door of the Apostles, in the pointed Gothic style. Adorned with statues of all the Apostles and many religious themes the entrance is breathtakingly beautiful.
Every Thursday morning at noon, in front of the Door of the Apostles, the ancient Water Court (Tribunal de las Aquas) convene to hear disputes among local farmers regarding the water rights to the river Turia in the Huerta area. This tradition has continued since the 10th century.
