Castle Rock New Zealand

The 162 metre Castle Rock stands out like a beacon at Castle Point in the Wairarapa District of the North Island of New Zealand.

share to Facebook The European explorer James Cook gave the name of Castle Point to this area because of the 162 metre high Castle Rock.

The tilted rocky ledge which extends out from Castle Rock creates a sheltered lagoon which is ideal for recreational boating, as well as being an ideal fishing spot. The rocks also contain more than 70 species of fossil shells.

The Castlepoint Lighthouse warns shipping traffic of the treacherous rugged coastline which it overlooks.
