The European explorer James Cook gave the name of Castle Point to this area because of the 162 metre high Castle Rock.

The tilted rocky ledge which extends out from Castle Rock creates a sheltered lagoon which is ideal for recreational boating, as well as being an ideal fishing spot. The rocks also contain more than 70 species of fossil shells.
