The town of Castellane in the Alpes de Haute region of Provence, France nestles at the eastern entrance to the Verdon Gorges at the meeting of Upper Verdon Road and Route Napoleon. The Route Napoleon is the road on which Napoleon Bonaparte travelled to Lyon to regain power after his stay on the Isle of Elba in the Mediterranean Sea.
High above Castellane, at the top of a massive rock, stands Chappelle Notre Dame du Roc. Originally, this high rock was the site of a Roman fort, and Petra Castellana, an ancient Roman town. Castellane did not move to its present location until the 13th century.
The Notre Dame du Roc chapel in Provence, France, was a destination for pilgrims and there are still many ex-votos, or offerings to be seen. To reach the Notre Dame du Roc Chapel walk along the ruins of the city wall that surrounded Castellane in the 14th century. Although it is a strenuous walk the view of the town and Verdon Gorges from the Notre Dame du Roc Chapel terrace is breathtaking.
