Looking at this picture of this Capybara at the Biodome de Montreal in Quebec, Canada, people may wonder what type of animal this is as its features are very similar to that of a guinea pig. It is actually a member of the rodent family that belongs in the same species as the guinea pig, agouti, coyphillas and chinchillas and is considered the largest type of rodent throughout the world.
The Capybara are a very heavy set animal with a short head and sports a coat of reddish colored fur with lighter coloring underneath. A tail is non-existent on the Capybara and their noses are very flat and rounded with their facial features being on the upper side of their heads.
Adults have been known to be grow to just over four feet long and about a foot and a half tall. The weight range for a Capybara can reach a little over one hundred and forty pounds with the female animal being the heavier sex. As they age, their fur becomes very coarse and grows in thin layers and rolling in the mud is a favorite past time just like that of a pig.
South American areas still have a steady number of Capybaras and a long list of zoos and parks still have homes for this animal.
