The lightkeepers who once resided at the Cape Reinga Lighthouse, could enjoy many beautiful sunsets during their evening shifts. They were also well aware of any horrific storms approaching across the horizon before they would move in and whip up the water. The lighthouse was automated in 1987 and the keepers were taken away, leaving the sunset hues and the storms to be enjoyed by visitors to Cape Reinga.
The Cape Reinga Lighthouse is a very popular attraction for tourists visiting the North Island of New Zealand during the day, but many also stay and enjoy the sunset hues which blanket the sky.
