The clouds lingering over the water off the North Island of New Zealand are not too threatening when the pink hues at sunset manage to sneak through while the rest of the sky is shaded in soft pastel colors. The silhouette of the cliff, which is home to the Cape Reinga Lighthouse, darkens every minute as the sun slowly sinks away for the evening.
The Cape Reinga Lighthouse is located on the northern tip of New Zealand surrounded by wide open waters where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet. The lighthouse is an important landmark in New Zealand and the location carries many Maori beliefs. It has been told that the cliff which houses the lighthouse was a point where the spirits of the dead would jump from so they would be able to start their adventure back to their home land of Hawaiki.
The lightkeepers who once resided at the Cape Reinga Lighthouse, could enjoy many beautiful sunsets during their evening shifts. They were also well aware of any horrific storms approaching across the horizon before they would move in and whip up the water. The lighthouse was automated in 1987 and the keepers were taken away, leaving the sunset hues and the storms to be enjoyed by visitors to Cape Reinga.
The Cape Reinga Lighthouse is a very popular attraction for tourists visiting the North Island of New Zealand during the day, but many also stay and enjoy the sunset hues which blanket the sky. Every sunset seen from the lighthouse is different with a variation in the colors and display across the New Zealand sky.
The North Island of New Zealand has not been completed until a visit to the Cape Reinga Lighthouse has been done.
