The Cape Egmont Lighthouse in Taranaki, New Zealand was still cared for by a lighthouse keeper up until 1986 when they replaced the keeper with an automatic light. In the day light hours, the lighthouse mark's the shore of Taranaki's most western location and during the evening and night time hours, the light flashes every eight seconds.
Built in the middle of the 1800's in London, the pieces of the Cape Egmont Lighthouse were shipped to New Zealand in pieces and then it was put together on Mana Island. This site was not appropriate for water vessels and the lighthouse was then taken apart and reassembled again in Cape Egmont, New Zealand.
Since 1881, the lighthouse has been a permanent structure at Cape Egmont in Taranaki, New Zealand but there were many problems relating to the town of Parihaka. There were eventually worked out and in 1951 the lighthouse was run from diesel generators and the lighthouse was without a keeper for a period of time. A vessel grounded itself in 1956 and a permanent lighthouse keeper was then put on duty who also kept a good log of the wind, temperatures, rain and weather systems that passed through Taranaki.
Soon modern technology took over, and the lighthouse keeper at Cape Egmont was no longer needed and his livelihood was taken away from him. Visitors still come to Cape Egmont Lighthouse in Taranaki on the North Island of New Zealand to climb the stairs to the base tower and read over all the information displayed about the lighthouse and enjoy the view.
