The calm harbour of the village of Vernazza offers protection to the boats that moor here. Vernazza is a picturesque little fishing village, one of the five villages of the Cinque Terre in the province of La Spezia, Liguria on the Italian Riviera, and is the only real harbour along the Cinque Terre.
The calm harbour of Vernazza is watched over by an ancient church and the Castle Doria, a bleak structure built on a rock 70 meters high. Years ago, the fishing fleet was the main livelihood of the inhabitants of Vernazza in Liguria, Italy, but today tourism has taken over as the main source of income, and the fishing 'fleet' now consists of only three boats.
There are no cars in Vernazza, there is a parking lot just as you enter...
... the village - so it is understandable that the locals are more likely to be boat-owners and moor their craft in the calm harbour, rather than worrying about parking a car. The Vernazza train station is about a ten minute walk along the main street to the harbour and the trains run often.
When visiting Vernazza and the Cinque Terre, remember the area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site so there is a park fee of a few Euros, but it is well worth the money to enjoy the beauty of the area.
