California is not just big surf and big stars. This diverse state on America's far West mainland is nicknamed the Golden State, not for the sands of the pacific South coast, but for the precious metal plundered from the ground in the North East. The state fish may be the Golden Trout, but the official state tree is the California Redwood. Redwoods grow as much as two and three hundred feet tall- the tallest trees in the world.
California is home to America's largest city, Los Angeles. Like its home state, Los Angeles is a colourful collection of the country's best, and it's not all about the big trees. California has the lowest and highest points in the United States, outside of Alaska. Below sea level, Death Valley is a salty desert where precipitation can't keep up with the speedy evaporation. As surfers flock to the state's southern beaches, climbers scramble to the mountains of Yosemite National Park to the North. In a state as varied as California, you can't help but find it all.
