The Caffe Florian was established in 1720, and although it was originally named Venezia Trionfante, in English 'Triumphant Venice', it was renamed after Floriano Francesconi the founder.
When Austria dominated Venice, Italy the Caffe Florian was the favourite place for the patriotic Italians to meet. Students and intellectuals also frequented the Caffe Florian.
In 1859 the interior was refurbished with wood carvings, ornate mirrors and cozy booths. Today, the Caffe Florian in Venice serves coffee, cakes and afternoon tea, but it is pricey - so be prepared. There is also a shop where you can purchase gourmet foods, perfumes and objects d'art.
