The lighthouse at Cabo de Gata sits on the Southern tip of the cape atop a rock overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in the Province of Almeria in Andalusia, Spain to aid water vessels in their journeys. Before arriving at the lighthouse, the road climbs quite steeply and then levels out where you will find the carpark and an assortment of buildings.
Stories have been told that sailors believed mermaids used to reside on this point so they named it the Reef of the Mermaids, but in reality they were just the calls of monk seals. An abundance of flora and fauna resides under the surface of the sea near the lighthouse bringing many scuba divers and snorkellers to the area.
