The Roman Amphitheatre dates back to 180 BC, but most of the buildings that still stand today were built during the 19th century by famous Lucca architect Lorenzo Nottolini, who cleared out the space and built the buildings around the outside on the original Roman foundations, which is why the area today still retains the original shape of the Amphitheatre.
