Budding Bougainvillea Ornamental Plant Picture: Scientific Name:
Bougainvillea spectabilis
The Bougainvillea in bud in Oliva Nova, in the Comunidad of Valenciana, Spain is rather confusing because it appears that the little flowers, still in bud, are stamens to the mauve petals, when in actuality the 'petals' are bracts, a special kind of leaf. As the real flowers open into three white flowers, the bracts, that have sheltered the unopened flowers, also spread to give the Bougainvillea vine its beautiful mass of colour. Another example of the coloured bracts is the Poinsettia.
The Bougainvillea is a deciduous plant in this dry region of Spain, however in other areas of the world where there's high rainfall it is an evergreen.
It's a popular ornamental plant which is found in many regions of the world including Taiwan, Malaysia, India, Australia, USA, Mexico, Caribbean, and the Mediterranean region of Europe.
