This type of monkey suits its name, the Bonnet Macaque, as they appear to be wearing a hat due to the peculiar lay of their fur. This particular monkey lives in its habitat at the Auckland Zoo on the North Island of New Zealand.
The Bonnet Macaque has a lifespan of over thirty years and grows to be about 35-60 cm in length with a tail length of 35-68 cm. The male monkey weighs between 5.5 - 9 kg and the female is a fair bit smaller and does not get much heavier then 4.5 kg.
This cute little monkey feeds mainly on fruits, nuts, seeds, flowers, invertebrates and cereals. They live in a group of up to 12 males and 15 females and split their day time activities between the trees and the ground.
The Macaque species of the monkey are native to Asia and Northern Asia but there are thousands housed in research facilities, zoos, wildlife parks or kept as pets in homes throughout the world. If you have never seen a Bonnet Macaque, take a trip to the Auckland Zoo and watch this incredible little monkey perform in its habitat.
