The blue boats moored in the harbour of Vernazza follow the many other vessels that have tied up, over the centuries, in this only real harbour of the Cinque Terre villages, along this lovely part of the Italian Riviera.
The five little villages of Cinque Terre in Liguria, Italy are Riomaggiore, to the east, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. Vernazza is considered the prettiest of the five villages, and, because the harbour is used by the fishing fleet and for tourist excursions, the most affluent.
On a sunny day, when the blue boats sail out of the harbour, the contrast with the colourful houses, slate roofs, and the old fort and castle is a sight worth seeing.
The Romans settled in Vernazza, Liguria...
... in the lst century, obviously seeing the potential for the little point of land reaching out into the Mediterranean Sea. The most popular way to visit all five of the Cinque Terre villages is by hiking along the trails - it can be completed in a day, or take a few days and enjoy each of the little villages and surrounding hills of Italy.
