Bison Enclosure Riding Mountain National Park Manitoba: Scientific Name:
Bison bison
In America, the Bison is usually referred to as Buffalo, and although they do both belong to the same Bovidae family, the Buffalo actually refers to the Asian Water Buffalo or the African Buffalo, and they are not exactly the same as the Bison.
These Bison are found in the Bison Enclosure in Riding Mountain National Park, and this is an area where they are protected from threats from the outside world. They are allowed to roam free and they have plenty to eat and are protected, so it allows them to thrive as a species. There are about 30 Bison in this area and although people can visit it,...
... it's an area that really does belong to these huge animals.
These are the largest terrestrial mammals in the whole of North America, and they usually travel in herds and rely on each other for protection and food gathering. In the 19th and 20th centuries, they were almost hunted to extinction and the European Bison is still endangered, but the American species seems to have bounced back. They are not domesticated animals by any means but it's still important to have areas like this Bison Enclosure so that they can thrive in peace and live together as a herd.

The American Bison and the European Bison are the only two of six species that still exist out of the six species of the subfamily Bovinae. The bison pictured here at Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba, Canada are of the American Bison subspecies.
