The Big Nickel is made from two vertical columns and some iron pieces that frame the first layer. Plywood makes up the middle section and then the exterior is covered with an outer coating of sheet metal.

By 2001, the Big Nickel was in dire need of some good cleaning and reconditioning until finally being placed outside of the Dynamic Earth Science Center in 2003.
