The largest nickel in the world is known as the Big Nickel that is located in Sudbury, Ontario and is the exact replica of the Canadian nickel from the year 1951. A famous landmark in Sudbury, the Big Nickel stands at thirty feet high and is about 24 inches thick.
The Big Nickel is made from two vertical columns and some iron pieces that frame the first layer. Plywood makes up the middle section and then the exterior is covered with an outer coating of sheet metal.
In 1964, the Big Nickel was first erected and since then it has been uprooted several times to various locations throughout Sudbury, Ontario. By 2001, the Big Nickel was in dire need of some good cleaning and reconditioning until finally being placed outside of the Dynamic Earth Science Center in 2003.
