The towers of San Gimignano are what make this town so unique to visit. They are one of the only places in the Tuscany region of Italy that have towers like this still standing.
The towers (at one time there were as many as 72 standing) which dominate the skyline were built to help defend the town against attacks. They were perfect points for lookouts to see if any enemy were coming, they provided shelter, and if the enemy got too close the defenders could pour boiling oil down on their heads. They were also used by families as a status symbol, and were a means of competition to see who could build the grandest and tallest tower.
