In 1885 the Cave and Basin National Historic Site of Canada became the first of the great National Park system of Canada and is situated in Banff National Park.
Because there were different versions of who had discovered the beautiful hot springs and cave on Sulphur Mountain, near Banff, Alberta, the small (10 square miles) area was designated as a National reserve by Prime Minister John A. Macdonald. This put a stop to arguments as to who had a claim on the hot springs, and also squashed any commercial plans.

There is a reasonable entrance fee to visit the mineral pool, basin, and buildings, as well as the trails leading to the original cave vent hole and the wetlands wild life. The bathing pavilion has interesting exhibits, and in the Bath House Theatre a film depicting the history of the park and hot springs can be viewed. There is also a snack bar to enjoy light refreshments and a gift shop for the inevitable souvenir.
