It's fascinating to think that the ancient mountains of ice known as icebergs which draw visitors to northern Newfoundland begun their lives as single snow flakes on the glaciers of Greenland some 10,000 - 15,000 years ago.
Now in the 21st century, those highly compressed snow flakes get to see the light of day. Depending on how aerated a section of ice is, the iceberg appears either white or in beautiful shades of blue. This beautiful blue colour of some icebergs comes from a lack of air bubbles caught in the ice which reduces the reflective properties of the ice.

Sculpted daily by the ocean, as well as by wind and rain, an iceberg has many jagged edges - chipped off constantly by the forces of nature, an action which can reveal beautiful blue shades in the ancient and ultra compressed ice.
