A bear trap at the old dump site near the town of Churchill, Manitoba in Canada has been set up to ensure both the safety of the Polar Bears as well as humans in case the bears enter into the wrong territory. The bear trap is made of steel and if they enter the enclosure, they will be kept here until the bay is frozen and then a successful release will take place.
In days past, the Polar Bears who wandered into town were shot, but due to the declining numbers and the tourism in which these Polar Bears bring to Churchill, releasing them back along the bay is the method preferred.
When winter fully sets in and the Hudson Bay begins to freeze over, Polar Bears very rarely wander astray into the town of Churchill as they are busy...
... searching out a real meal of ringed seals. As you can see in this picture, the landscape has just begun to get its first coat of ice and hungry bears may head into town as food is limited along the shoreline. A sick or very old Polar Bear could possibly get disoriented and accidentally make his way into the main downtown area of Churchill, reeking havoc for himself and the local residents.
