... Corbinian (670c-730c) founded a Benedictine Abbey on one of the hills near Freising, where there was already a sanctuary. Freising's coat of arms depicts a saddled bear due to Saint Corbinian's actions. According to Bishop Arbeo, a biographer, a bear killed Corbinian's packhorse on his way to Rome, so he saddled the bear and ordered it to carry his possessions over the Alps, when reaching Rome he released the bear.
Even though Munich, 35 kilometres south of Freising, has grown to be a larger city, the old world charm and architecture of Freising makes it an enjoyable vacation spot.
