Arctic Seal

A Harp Seal Pup waits beside a hole in the pack ice for its mother to return from the arctic waters of the Gulf of St Lawrence.

Arctic Seal: Scientific Name:
Phoca groenlandica

A 3 day old Harp Seal Pup, born on the arctic pack ice of Canada, waits for the return of its mother. Otherwise known as white coats, these cute animals are unable to swim and must remain on the ice for about 4-5 weeks after it has moulted its white fur. The harp seal only feeds on its mother rich milk for the first 2 weeks of its life, before it is left to fend for itself. This cute Arctic Harp Seal or White Coat was found on the ice floes on the Gulf of St Lawrence.
