The archway is the entrance to the Piazza del Duomo, or the Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles), where most of the famous buildings of Pisa, Italy can be found. The Leaning Tower, Torre Pendente, was intended to be the bell tower for the Duomo, but it started leaning soon after construction was underway in 1173. For centuries there were fears the tower would topple over, and finally in 2001 it was declared stable.
Once again it is open to the public, but there can be long waits and line-ups for those wishing to make the climb. The Duomo of Pisa was begun in 1063, a fine example of Romanesque architecture and artwork of Giambologna and Della Robbia along with other famous artists.
