Apricot Shipping Crate Central Otago Orchard: Scientific Name:
Prunus armeniaca
In the backdrop, a commercial picker uses a specially designed machine to pick each apricot from the tree and then empties them into this large wooden shipping crate. The crate is towed around the orchard by a tractor, and when it is full, it will be sealed up and moved on to the local distributors throughout New Zealand.
The apricot is a fleshy fruit with a thin outer skin and a stone located in the center and when ripe, the coloring of the fruit can be yellow or orange with a slight tinge of red on either side. The redness comes from how the apricot hangs on the tree, as this is the side which usually is exposed to the sun.
