It was Aristotle who first divided living things into two categories, namely the animal kingdom and the plant kingdom. Later, Carolus Linnaeus further classified animals as well as plants and created a hierarchical classification system with which biologists and zoologists today use as a foundation. In modern days however, the structure of the classification methods is much more complicated.
What defines an animal from a plant is whether it produces its own food (plant) or whether it requires to feed off other things such as other animals or plants to survive (animal). From this point, animals are divided between invertebrates and vertebrates, and so on. It is quite an involved process!
