In a world of high-tech concrete and glass cities, it is easy to forget that we share this planet with innumerable creatures of all shapes, colors, and sizes. Bird-watchers could do no better than a visit to New Zealand for some truly exceptional sights. The endangered Kaka and the pesky Kea are two native parrots, while the Variable Oystercatcher is a coastal feeder, prancing about on long pink legs.
Zoos and other animal reserves offer a chance to photograph some of the earth's rare creatures, such as the Sumatran Tiger. In the wild, this small tiger is found only on the Island of Sumatra, Indonesia, but the Auckland Zoo is doing their part to help conserve the species that now number less than 500 individuals. The Cotton Topped Tamarin is another happy resident of the Auckland Zoo, a monkey well-named for the sprout of white hair growing from the top of their heads.
