The ancient Reifenstein Castle in Freienfeld or Campo di Trens in Italian, near Vipiteno (German - Sterzig) in the South Tyrol region of Italy dates back to the 12th century. It is located above a now dry marshland area in the Eisack-Isarco river valley.
It is possible when Reifenstein Castle, in Italy, was first built the marshland could have been under water forming a lake or stream, therefore giving the castle a natural fortification against intruders.
Reifenstein Castle is known to the Italian speaking population of the South Tyrol as Castel Tasso. This name probably comes from the fact that at one time the ancient castle was the property of a well-known German family called Thurn and Taxis. Originally, in the 13th century...
... the family was from Lombardy and their name was Tasso.
Reifenstein Castle, near Vipiteno in Italy, underwent modifications in the 14th century and today it is one of the best preserved ancient castles in this region of Italy. The Gothic paintings in the 'Green Hall' and the armour collection are outstanding and well worth the visit to Reifenstein Castle near Vipiteno in the South Tyrol, Italy.
