Ancient Castle Aragon: Scientific Name:
Papaver rhoeas
The ancient Loarre Castle or Castillo de Loarre to the Spanish, can be found in the Pyrenees foothills in Aragon, Spain with a field of poppies close by. The first part of the Loarre Castle began around 1020, strategically placed on the border between the Muslim and Christian lands.
Two towers have survived from this time, the Torre del Homenaje or Homage Tower and the Torre de la Reina, The Tower of the Queen. Sancho el Mayor founded an Augustinian canon community in Loarre Castle in Aragon, Spain in 1073 and the second construction stage began around this time.
It is quite possible that the field of poppies is ancient and has been around almost as long as the Loarre Castle. The poppies grow on battlefields and farmlands and...
... although it is an annual flower the seed heads are so prolific the next year's crop is ensured. The corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas) is considered a weed to the farmers in temperate climates, but there is nothing as cheerful as a field of poppies waving in the breeze.
