The mineral emblem of Ontario is the Amethyst for good reason, it is found in abundance at a mine located near Thunder Bay. First discovered during the building of a road in 1955, the Amethyst Mine has been in production since 1960 and continues to this day. The amethyst is February's birthstone, and the Amethyst Mine Panorama has many varieties and forms of the precious gem. Ontario has the largest deposit of Amethyst in Ontario, Canada.
