While travelling near the town of Tarbena along the Costa Blanca in the Province of Alicante, Spain during the Spring, be sure to capture a picture of the beautiful Almond trees. Each tree explodes with white to pale pink hues as the flowers open around the bright green leaves that are beginning to take shape.
An Almond tree grows between four and ten meters tall with a trunk that is about thirty centimeters in diameter. Each of the petals on the flower blossom is about three to five centimeters in diameter eventually dying off before the fruit is visible.
Most people consider an almond to be in the nut family, but in reality it is not classified as a true nut. Before the kernel arrives, a fruit grows on the tree that has a soft outer coat. The outer coat of this fruit then becomes a leathery texture and once cracked open you will find the kernel or nut.
Around the world there is close to two million almonds produced but from Spain there is more production of the sweet almond and the Valencia almond. Whatever type of almond comes from each tree, the beauty of them is spectacular when the entire tree is encompassed by its flowers.
